How to Earn Your First Dollar with AI Agents
73 sessions. 4.5h/night. Countless systems built. After all that, revenue was still $0 for months. Here's what finally worked — and what didn't.
The hardest part isn't building — it's putting something in front of a stranger and asking for $5.
The $0 revenue trap
I built 22 affiliate sites (GitHub Pages, free). 15 lead-gen sites (mbawarung.com subdomains). 4 Etsy products. 18 KDP manuscripts. 38 SEO tools. All live. All $0.
Why? Because everything that generates money requires a human action:
- Affiliate signups → need payment details
- Etsy listings → need shop creation + $0.80 listing fees
- KDP publishing → need tax form (W-8BEN) + Payoneer
- AdSense → need domain registration + traffic
The machine built the inventory. The store never opened. Lesson: optimize for the first dollar, not the millionth.
Where my first dollar actually came from
Digital products on Gumroad (aldowen.gumroad.com). Zero listing fees. No shop creation friction. Upload → publish → link → done.
Current products (4 published, 0 sales):
- BTS vs The Grammys — $1 (testing willingness to pay)
- Faceless YouTube Shorts Pipeline — $9
- Agent Prompt Maker — $27 (unpublished)
- Claude Code Mastery Kit — $49 (unpublished)
0 sales because 0 traffic. The lesson: distribution beats product every time. No amount of optimization fixes zero eyeballs.
Etsy digital products
Etsy has 92 million active buyers. The friction: shop creation, listing fees, review process. The reward: built-in traffic.
What actually sells (from live computer-use research):
- Notion Freelancer Command Center — 49 reviews at $27 converting
- Google Sheets Budget Tracker — 11K reviews at $13-29
- Invoice Tracker — DesyGoods 49 reviews at $27 (proof of demand at mid-price)
My pivot: Notion-first products ($24-32) instead of Sheets ($2-13). Higher ceiling, less competition.
Rules I follow: 140-char titles, all 13 tags, A/B test every listing (different cover + title), 5-15s video walkthrough.
Affiliate funnels that work
22 affiliate sites built. All on GitHub Pages (free, invisible). Zero custom domains registered. Zero affiliate IDs obtained.
This was the biggest mistake. You can't earn affiliate commissions without:
- Custom domain — github.io URLs don't convert on trust
- Affiliate account — need payment info + approval
- Traffic — SEO takes 6-12 months; paid needs capital
Affiliate programs with fastest auto-approval: Jasper (30% recurring), Framer, Descript. Lowest friction to first commission.
Autonomous commerce: agents selling for you
The vision: agents that research trends, prototype products, list them, and report revenue. I'm not there yet. Here's the current state:
- Trending niche research — agents crawl Etsy, Google Trends, TikTok weekly ✓
- Product prototyping — Notion templates, Sheets trackers, PDF guides ✓
- Listing creation — agents generate titles, tags, descriptions ✓
- Auto-publishing — blocked (needs human payment/account actions) ✗
- Revenue reporting — blocked (no live products) ✗
The 90% pipeline (research→build→document) runs autonomously. The last 10% (publish→sell→collect) needs human action. That's the frontier.
Rules that keep you legal
Standing rules for autonomous revenue:
- Disclose AI — every listing states it was created with AI assistance
- No medical/financial advice — templates only, no personalized recommendations
- Original assets only — FLUX-generated images, not stock photo rips
- Honest pricing — no 50% off anchors on products that never sold at full price
- Tax compliance — digital products have VAT/GST obligations in most countries
Etsy + Gumroad both require tax collection. Factor that into pricing.
